Frustrating the user on purpose: a step toward building an affective computer
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using social science methods to induce a state of frustration in users, we collected physiological , video and behavioral data, and developed a strategy for coupling these data with real-world events. The eeectiveness of the proposed strategy was tested in a study with thirty-six subjects , where the system was shown to reliably synchronize and gather data for aaect analysis. Hidden Markov Models were applied to each sub-ject's physiological signals of skin conductivity and blood volume pressure in an eeort to see if regimes of likely frustration could be automatically discriminated from regimes when all was proceeding smoothly. This pattern recognition approach correctly classiied these two regimes 67.4% of the time. Mouse-clicking behavior was also synchronized to frustration-eliciting events, and analyzed, revealing NN distinct patterns of clicking responses

Instrumentation for Automatic Monitoring of Affective State in Human-Computer Interaction
In the modern world we interact with computers for many activities, such as working and learning. Computers are great tools for these tasks. However, some times our interaction with computers is degraded because they are inflexible and unaware of our own level of comfort in that interaction. The emerging field of ‘Affective Computing’ strives to give computers an awareness of the affective stat...
متن کاملThe impact of frustration-mitigating messages delivered by an interface agent
Mitigating frustration is important within computer-based learning contexts. In this experimental study where participants were purposefully frustrated, the interface agent message (apologetic, empathetic, or silent) was manipulated to investigate its impact on student attitude toward the task, attitude toward the agent, and attribution toward the cause of frustration. Fifty-seven undergraduate...
متن کاملAffective Pacman: A Frustrating Game for Brain-Computer Interface Experiments
We present the design and development of Affective Pacman, a game that induces frustration to study the effect of user state changes on the EEG signal. Affective Pacman is designed to induce frustration for short periods, and allows the synchronous recording of a wide range of sensors, such as physiological sensors and EEG in addition to the game state. A self-assessment is integrated in the ga...
متن کاملQuery expansion based on relevance feedback and latent semantic analysis
Web search engines are one of the most popular tools on the Internet which are widely-used by expert and novice users. Constructing an adequate query which represents the best specification of users’ information need to the search engine is an important concern of web users. Query expansion is a way to reduce this concern and increase user satisfaction. In this paper, a new method of query expa...
متن کاملEmotion Modelling and Facial Affect Recognition in Human-Computer and Human-Robot Interaction
As research has revealed the deep role that emotion and emotion expression play in human social interaction, researchers in human-computer interaction have proposed that more effective human-computer interfaces can be realized if the interface models the user’s emotion as well as expresses emotions. Affective computing was defined by Rosalind Picard (1997) as computing that relates to, arises f...
